September 20, 2011 - Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Tour
From the moment we all gathered in the Reception Lobby, we knew we were going to be touring a facility with a cause and a unique outlook. The campus was designed with three major themes; Balance, Connectivity, and Community.
Balance
It was exciting to see the practical and innovative uses of energy savings and resources throughout the tour; the campus has achieved LEED platinum certification.
The four-story Atrium is heated and cooled using a combination of a convection process and automated windows and blinds (used throughout the campus) that adjust for sun exposure and temperature shifts, greatly limiting the need for air-conditioning. This area can also be used to gather the entire campus for presentations or meetings, using the upper floor balconies as additional attendee viewing space. Alder flooring cut and installed on the end grain in many of the high traffic areas makes an otherwise impractical choice now green, low-maintenance and durable.
Rooftop solar panels offset some of the energy uses. “Living roofs” planted with bird-friendly native plants absorb 90% of the water that falls on them. As you know, living in the Northwest, that can be quite a collection! All of this rainwater is then stored in a 100-million-gallon underground tank and is used for the reflecting pools, irrigation, and toilets. Depending on the time of year, the plant colors can vary and add a lovely aesthetic to an otherwise typically unused and dreary surface.
Connectivity
The building structures form “arms” that reach out to embrace the world’s most vulnerable people, and also ground the foundation firmly within the Seattle community. Sweeping, open staircases which connect each floor have pleasantly turned into impromptu meeting spaces. Wireless access allows connectivity throughout the campus including touch-down workspaces and the outdoor courtyard.
Community
A new 2012 Visitor Center will show more about all the good things the Foundation is working on. The connecting walkways will allow observers to see current activities as they look into the campus. Although a large portion of the foundation’s focus is on global concerns, they are also very active in the Pacific Northwest with community outreach programs and local support.
Thank you, Gates Foundation, for making this a CoreNet event to remember.
