Message from the President

Welcome to the Washington State Chapter of CoreNet Global.  Our chapter is focused on advancing real estate knowledge, connecting people, and promoting personal excellence through programs focused on the needs of our local members.  While there are a number of excellent organizations in the state serving the real estate community, CoreNet is the only one that focuses on the corporate real estate executive.  We offer education and networking opportunities for corporate real estate executives and staff, economic development professionals and service providers including brokers, developers, architects, contractors, and others in related fields.

Remember, the board encourages members or interested persons to become involved at all levels.  With our expanded agenda, board committee leaders are recruiting participation among those who may only want to be involved in specific areas such as membership, sponsorship, communications, special events, programs, education, emerging leaders.  Call our office or contact us through the website.  Your help expands our services to CoreNet members.

The board held its annual retreat on June 11 with the focus on our chapter’s Strategic Plan.  Many thanks to John Coates who made accommodation arrangements that provided a collegial working atmosphere.  After much deliberation, the Board adopted the following:

Mission:  To provide an environment for Education, Leadership Development and Networking to enhance the success of corporate Real Estate professionals and the organizations they serve.

Vision:  To be the professional organization of choice for the Pacific Northwest corporate real estate community.

Values:  Trust, Integrity, Respect, Inspire

Upcoming Events:

Special Events that provide an opportunity to bring members together to make new connections renew old friendships and nurture important relationships.

  • CoreNet Global will again hold a Discovery Forum October 26th at Microsoft as a follow up to last year’s Discovery Forum focused on Sustainability, also sponsored by Microsoft.  The chapter is sponsoring a reception following the event.

  • The Emerging Leaders Group led by Charlie Malley of Pacific Real Estate Partners has held two meetings and is attracting new members.  The board has supported this effort and is focused, along with its Student Representative, to attract new members to CoreNet.

Chapter Programs will provide content, knowledge sharing and professional development for the corporate real estate community:

September 21st: A chance to tour McKinstry’s new Innovation Center.  This will be an “after hours” event and should not be missed.

October 19th:       Ed White, VP Real Estate for Alaska Airlines will discuss their unique portfolio and lease administration issues.

November 16th: A panel including Joni Earl CEO of Sound Transit and Ron Paananen, DOT Seawall and Viaduct Project Manager will update us on the status of public transportation issues facing the region and their impact on corporate real estate.

December 2nd:    Our annual holiday party will be held at the Knoll showroom which is located on the top floor of the IBM Building, 1200 5th Avenue in downtown Seattle.

Chapter Communications will be focused not only on our membership through such channels as this web site, but includes aggressively pursuing a public outreach effort to spotlight CoreNet activity.  Lori Walker of NBBJ has been diligently pursuing increased coverage of our accomplishments.

Past Events This Year:  In support of our membership, we have been offered a variety of programs.  The following is a recap of our program and network activities to date.

January:  Dr. James DeLisle, Runstad Professor of Real Estate and Director of Graduate Real Estate Studies at the University of Washington delivered his real estate forecast; “Reflecting on the Future”.  It provided attendees a better understanding of the real estate economic climate for 2010.

February:  Expedia hosted our first “after hours” event with tours of their facility in Bellevue.   In cooperation with Expedia, the chapter hosted the refreshments that provided an excellent opportunity for networking with their fellow members and guests.

March:  Paul Isaki, Senior Advisor to the Director of Commerce of Washington State discussed the top priorities of the states economic development agency.  At the conclusion, Mr. Isaki also provided his 2010 season forecast of the Seattle Mariner’s, Mr. Isaki’s former employer.

April:  Boeing hosted a tour of their Renton facility for the Chapter.  This tour not only focused on aircraft construction but illustrated how incorporating engineers into the assembly plant increased the company’s profitability through the correct selection of “place” in an organization.

May:  Arnold Levin of NBBJ Architects provided local members an encore presentation of his CoreNet Global Summit presentation on the challenges and impacts of workplace design.  Needless to say, change is not all that easy.

June:  The summer brought an opportunity for our members and friends to get together at Redmond Ridge on June 16th.  60 players enjoyed golf and good friends.  We believe each one had a great day (and some even had a great golf game).  We want to thank Scott Carter, our Special Events Chair for making all this happen.

The board of the Washington State Chapter is committed to elevating the role of the corporate real estate professional.  With your help and participation we can continue our success.  I look forward to working with each and every one of you.  You’ve seen what we are offering to our members, but we’d also like to find out what else you’d like to see from our Chapter.  If there is an idea or concept we should take a look at, please e-mail me at heberk@geometricsllc.com.  Also, remember that we are always looking for new talent, and committee membership is not limited to CoreNet members.  We welcome those who want to become involved.
